In Sudan, a civil war has torn families apart, leaving millions displaced and struggling to survive. Meet Qisma Abdirahman Ali Abubaker, a mother whose heartache echoes the pain of many in Zamzam Camp, Northern Darfur.

Qisma's eyes reflect her sorrow as she waits for her meager food ration. Three of her children, aged three, two, and six months, have succumbed to disease and hunger in the past four months alone. Their story is tragically common in a region facing the world's worst hunger crisis.

Zamzam Camp, the oldest and largest in Sudan, now sees a grim reality: one child dies every two hours, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). With limited food, water, and healthcare, preventable illnesses become fatal.

MSF's recent screening reveals alarming statistics: three in ten children under five are severely malnourished, along with a third of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. These numbers, though shocking, likely represent only a fraction of the crisis in Sudan.

For families like Qisma's, access to healthcare is a luxury they can't afford. The violence has disrupted farming, leaving many jobless and dependent on aid. Zamzam, already fragile from past conflicts, now teeters on the brink of catastrophe as food supplies dwindle and healthcare falters.

The situation is dire across Sudan. Babiker Nahar Paediatric Hospital in Fasher struggles to keep up with the influx of malnourished children. Dr. Ezzedine Ibrahim notes that while malnutrition cases were common before the war, they've doubled since.

In remote areas, the situation is even worse. Aid workers describe regions as "black holes" in humanitarian aid, where children like Ihsan Adam Abdullah and unnamed little boys suffer in silence, trapped between starvation and death.

MSF's efforts are commendable, but they can't tackle this crisis alone. They urge international aid agencies to return and join the fight to save lives. Without swift action and improved access to aid, the death toll will continue to rise.

The children of Darfur deserve better. It's time for the world to stand up and take notice of their suffering, offering hope where there is currently only despair.

Famine(기근)

Famine(기근) is a situation in which a substantial proportion of the population of a country or region are unable to access adequate food, resulting in widespread acute malnutrition and loss of life by starvation and disease.

Hunger and malnutrition(굶주림과 영양실조)

Not the same thing. Worldwide, malnutrition contributes to almost half of the deaths in children under 5, claiming the lives of over 3 million children per year. A child facing poverty may not be hungry, but she may be malnourished and not getting the vitamins and minerals she needs to thrive. Without enough food or the right nutrition, children face a variety of setbacks that can derail their path out of poverty. Here are a few malnutrition-related roadblocks
